This is a book that was originally published for mass consumption around 1898. Written by Matsunosuke Iguchi, images taken from an original copy of the book. Done entirely in woodblock etchings. It contains Jujutsu techniques that were borrowed from Tenjin Shinyo Ryu, a popular school of Jujutsu at the time, and contains basic Hojojutsu. This is a .PDF document.
This is a simple knot for hojojutsu. Notice that the knot faces inward, towards the wrist, so it is almost impossible to untie once synched on.
Hojojutsu (捕縄術) is nothing special, actually, in terms of tying. How it is used makes it "specialized".
The same knots are used in fishing and marine activities, for old style lashing used in farming, construction....all kinds of trades. It was simply applied to "omawari" needs. An "omawari" (お巡り) is a police officer, this terms harkens back to Edo town culture. The omawari was normally a bushi - or were at least run by them with help from the town, especially in a sparsely populated area . The omawari many times were the local fire department, emergency crew...you name it, rolled into one.
Be warned, I do not recommend doing this on people unless you know what you are doing. Once synched on tightly, it can cut off circulation and must be cut off. Do not attempt tying people or animals with this knot unless you know what you are doing. Safety first....caution and common sense always.
That being said I have left out a good portion of how to use this and do it properly for safety reasons.
