The elements of jujutsu (taijutsu) can apply equally to armed and unarmed situations and function relatively the same. In this instance, a simple flute (fuebo - 笛某) is used. The most important elements to this is functional body movement (taisabaki - 体捌き) and application. (Oyo - 応).
This is a basic principle that is found in most martial arts regarding unbalancing (fukinko; 不均衡) and penetrating (tsukitosu; 突き通す) the opponent's guard. While the techniques of ottsuke are fundamentals (kihon tekina; 基本的な) in unto themselves, they allow a pathway to perform other techniques, especially if the opponent gives strong resistance. In this way, ottsuke can be thought of as a point of entry, or a gateway into the application of techniques.
